Ministry of Education releases approved textbook list for first CBC Grade 10 cohort.
After the Ministry of Education released an approved list, senior schools getting ready to host the first cohort of Grade 10 students under the Competency-Based Curriculum now have clear guidance on the learning materials to be used.
The list, which was released on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, outlines the guides and textbooks that are permitted in schools and marks a significant stage in the transition to senior school.
The approved document, which was released to the public on Tuesday, December 23, describes curricular support materials that adhere to CBC learning and assessment methods and national standards.
It also clarifies how learning at the senior school level will be organised, with learners required to study seven learning areas made up of compulsory and optional subjects.
At senior school, all learners will take four core subjects, which are English, Kiswahili, Core Mathematics, and Community Service Learning.
In addition to these, learners will select three other subjects depending on their interests, abilities, aptitude, and career goals, under the guidance of their teachers.
The CBC senior school structure is organised into three career pathways. These are Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science, with each pathway having specific approved learning materials.

The Ministry of Education has stated that teachers in senior schools will be responsible for selecting learning materials strictly from the approved list.
Teachers are expected to use both learner books and teacher guides while ensuring that teaching, learning, and assessment methods remain aligned with CBC requirements.
According to the ministry, learners completing senior school should be able to communicate clearly and use information and communication technology in different situations.
They are also expected to apply mathematical, logical, and critical thinking skills to solve problems and use basic research and scientific skills to interact with and improve their surroundings.
By the end of senior school, learners should also be able to develop and use their talents for leisure, personal fulfilment, career growth, further education, and training, in line with the goals of the Competency-Based Curriculum.
