Criteria for placement of learners in Junior Secondary School next year,2023
When learners will sit for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) this year, the Ministry of Education has published the criteria it will use to send Grade 6 applicants into junior secondary schools in January next year.
All Grade 6 students will take their final primary school examinations in November this year, with Grade 7 students going to junior high school in January 2023.
This exam, dubbed the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), will take place between November 28 and November 30 in 2022.

The above tests will consist of multiple choice questions and will follow the KCPE format.
1.Proximity to their residences
All Grade 6 pupils will be placed in junior secondary schools based on the distance between their houses and the schools, according to authorities from both county and national education departments.
Learners will be assigned to junior high schools based on their proximity to their old primary school, according to the State Department responsible with overseeing the implementation of competency-based curriculum, CBC.
“The ability of parents to take a child to the school they have chosen will inform the posting of learners to junior high,” Ruth Mugambi, the Principal Secretary’s technical adviser on CBC matters,
Learners will be placed in Grade 7 based on their performance on the KPSEA national assessments and the School Based Assessments (SBA).
The SBA is expected to contribute 60% to the learners’ ultimate performance, while the KPSEA will contribute 40%.
The KPSEA national test will take the place of the KCPE. In their last assessment in elementary school, normal Grade 6 students will take five topics. Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Integrated Science and Creative Art, and Social Studies are the subjects covered.
Ann Ngatia, the Knec Competency Based Assessment (CBA) Coordinator, indicated that Integrated and Creative Sciences will be an amalgamation of many topics, with the five being included in the KPSEA at the conclusion of primary school.
“The exam will be difficult.”
3.The learner’s choice of optional subjects
Another criterion for placing Grade 6 students in Grade 7 will be the secondary schools that offer the optional topics that the students chose.
Government mandates that secondary schools offer at least three of the students’ elective topics.
The above choice of optional topics will be used to determine where a child will be assigned to secondary school.
Then Grade 6 students are required to select at least one and up to two optional subjects among those offered in Grade.
