Gov’t To Employ 20,000 More Teachers By July.

According to Ezekiel Machogu, cabinet secretary for education, the government plans to hire 20,000 more teachers in order to overcome the severe teacher shortage the nation is now experiencing and raise the teacher-to-student ratio.

Speaking on Wednesday at Bungoma County’s Kolanya Girl’s National School, Machogu stated that since taking office in September 2022, the administration has already hired over 50,000 teachers.

The education minister stated, “This government has hired a record 56,750 teachers since taking office, and as a ministry, we have received additional money to employ 20,000 teachers this financial year.”

The CS reaffirmed his dedication to enhancing the nation’s educational infrastructure.

His remarks came in response to a protest by Teso South Member of Parliament Mary Emase, who implored the government to elevate educators as a means of providing incentives to enhance student achievement in general.

The school principal had already stated that the shortage was severely affecting them, with only 40 government-employed instructors against the Ministry of Education’s aim of around 65 teachers.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the teachers’ employer, nevertheless has thousands of unemployed teachers.

The TSC stated in February that it was in talks with the Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among other partners, to find employment for tutors abroad, in response to calls for improving the local teacher-student ratio.

Then, TSC Director of Legal Calvin Anyuor stated that it would be wise to secure possibilities elsewhere for Kenya’s oversupply of teachers.

We have an excess of teachers in the nation, thus we have begun collaborating with important parties to export the teaching resource. In order to send our teachers to teach English in Germany, we are working with the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other pertinent government organizations,” Anyuor stated.

TSC employs more than 400,000 instructors, and by the next year, the commission hopes to hire 46,000 teacher interns on permanent, pensionable conditions.

The two-year contract arrangement for the interns is almost over.
