KUPPET Faces Leadership Rift Over Secretary General’s Retirement Age Proposal.

A proposed constitutional amendment recently sparked contentious debates within the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).

The main goal of the proposal is to raise the Secretary General’s retirement age from 60 to 65. Delegates engaged in heated discussion on this at the 26th Annual Delegates Conference in Vihiga County.

Opposing opinions regarding the proposed amendment were voiced by delegates, transforming the conference into an intense and occasionally heated discussion. Observers harshly condemned the procedure, especially Junior School (JS) representatives.

Some claimed that “these amendments aren’t following proper processes,” accusing union officials of ignoring appropriate procedural standards.

The lack of widespread consultation across KUPPET’s 47 branches was the main issue brought up. Significant constitutional amendments like this one, according to delegates, ought to be the subject of in-depth discussion at all levels.

“The proposals being discussed here haven’t been debated in all branches nationwide,” one person observed. This called into doubt the union’s dedication to justice and openness.

Recent internal conflicts within KUPPET provide a setting for the debate over the Secretary General’s retirement age. Among the governance issues the organization has encountered is the controversial dismissal of Assistant National Treasurer Ronald Tonui.

Tonui eventually filed a legal challenge to his termination, severely dividing the union.

These disputes highlight larger worries for many members regarding KUPPET’s governance procedures and the openness of its leadership choices.

Akelo Misori, the secretary general of KUPPET, steadfastly defended the proposed changes, arguing that they would promote diversity within the union’s leadership.

“If you’re an observer, you don’t have the express right to speak, contribute, or even vote,” Misori said in reference to the JS observers’ involvement in the debate.

Misori underlined the goals of the modifications, which include expanding representation and diversity, especially for women and individuals with disabilities.

Although his followers praised these plans as progressive, others had doubts about the procedure and questioned whether the amendments actually matched the union’s pledges of transparency and democracy.

Misori has suggested a consultative meeting between JS representatives and union leadership in an effort to bridge the growing divide.

Although it is unclear if this discussion will result in a substantive resolution or only delay more serious disputes, he believes it will constructively address their concerns.

There are currently serious concerns about KUPPET’s future. Members are demanding a more open and inclusive decision-making process in addition to this particular idea.

It is obvious that if the union wants to mend internal conflicts and rebuild trust among its members, it must confront these issues head-on.

The ongoing discussion shows that KUPPET is at a turning point in its history, and that its destiny will be determined by the principles of justice, inclusivity, and good governance.

How its leadership handles the present difficulties will determine whether unity can be attained. Although the future remains unknown, one thing is certain: this discussion is far from finished.
