MoE Rejects 60,000 Requests for Student Transfers Due to School Capacity.

Due to school capacity constraints, the Ministry of Education has turned down transfer requests from almost 60,000 pupils who took the 2025 Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA).

Julius Bitok, the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, claims that most of the kids who wanted to transfer to senior schools applied to elite schools, which are less than 20 in the nation and lack the infrastructure necessary to accommodate a big student body.

According to the government, the Grade 10 placement was entirely automated, taking into account students’ preferences, KJSEA performance, psychometric test results, equitable concerns, and school capacity.

“Out of the 183,000 that have been processed, 116,000 transfers have been approved, and 66,000 have been declined, so that is the position that we are at now,” Bitok said during an interview on Saturday, December 27.

Due to school capacity constraints, the Ministry of Education has denied transfer requests from almost 60,000 pupils who took the 2025 Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA).

Julius Bitok, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, claims that most of the kids who wanted to transfer to senior schools applied to elite schools, which are less than 20 in the nation and lack the infrastructure to accommodate a big student body.

According to the government, the Grade 10 placement was completely automated, taking into account students’ preferences, KJSEA performance, psychometric test results, equitable concerns, and school capacity.

“Capacity is the primary reason we are turning down the majority of requests. He continued, “I have stated that over 50,000 pupils are interested in 20 schools, which is unmanageable.

In order to get alternative universities, impacted students have been instructed to submit new appeals within the first week of January.

According to the government, those whose transfers have been granted will have access to admission letters to their respective institutions beginning on Sunday, December 28.

According to the Ministry, a total of 1,130,459 learners sat the 2025 KJSEA, with 578,630 being male,  and 551,829 being female.

“The top performers in each STEM, social science, and arts track will get priority placement in boarding schools of their choice,” the Ministry stated.

“One sad thing is that there are several schools in some areas that are not attracting enough students, and as a ministry, we are really thinking hard to ensure that these students have students across the country, and we are thinking of opening the second revision between dates 6 and 9,” Bitok stated.

The ministry also said that beginning on January 12, students would have to report to their individual senior schools.

On Thursday, December 11, the Ministry of Education released the 2025 KJSEA exam results. On Friday, December 19, the Grade 10 placements were made public.
