MPs’ Sitting Allowances Abolished -SRC

Sitting allowances for Members of Parliament in plenary have been eliminated by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
During a meeting with the Editor’s Guild on Thursday at the Sarova Stanley, chairperson Lyn Mengich made the announcement.

On Wednesday, the Salaries Commission published new pay scales for elective positions around the nation, along with allowances for those who will hold the positions.

The notice states, in part, “Sitting allowances for plenary session; is abolished and ceases to be payable.”
Both sitting and automobile grants have been eliminated, and their place has been taken by a transport facilitation allowance.
MPs will maintain their own vehicles, not the government.

Mengich stated that the compensation would be due when State officers in the 13th Parliament took office.
A Member of Parliament’s monthly compensation is set for the duration of their tenure in office, unless it is reviewed and adjusted by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, she said.

She pointed out that the compensation includes payment for plenary sitting and takes into account the grade from the assessed job appraisal.
Mengich added that the pensionable emolument must be based on the predetermined monthly basic pay for purposes of gratuity and pension.

She continued by saying that the deconsolidated compensation structure complies with the Nairobi Court’s ruling in ELRC Petition 29 of 2019.
Members of the Senate and National Assembly who serve on committees will receive the following Committee Sitting Allowance:

The Chairperson would receive Sh15,000 every meeting, with a monthly cap of Sh240,000.
The Vice-Chairperson will receive Sh12,000 for each meeting, with a monthly cap of Sh192,000.
Members will get a maximum of Sh120,000 every month, or Sh7,500 per sitting.

Additionally, the MPs would receive residence allowances of Sh150,000, basic allowances of Sh426,000, and a gross of Sh710,000 per year.
The basic wage is equal to 60% of the agreed-upon gross wage.
