Teachers Unions Are Now Pressuring TSC to Implement New Teaching Standards
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has received a number of petitions from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT). One of these demands is to lower the requirements for people who want to become teachers.
KNUT suggests lowering the current standard of a C+ grade to a C plain.
KNUT contends that instructors who have graduated from teachers training colleges have the knowledge and training required to teach at the junior secondary level.
Currently, the TSC only employs educators with a secondary school GPA of C+. However, KNUT is requesting that this recruiting and deployment criteria be reevaluated.
The TSC has previously been under fire for its stringent hiring standards, which led to many qualified teachers finding themselves jobless after graduation. KNUT supports a more open-minded strategy that would increase job options for teachers, especially those who have the potential to succeed in the teaching field.
In an effort to provide a more complete educational system, the government has recently concentrated on implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
This curriculum places a higher priority on the acquisition of practical information and skills by students, preparing them for the workforce rather than only looking for white-collar jobs.
KNUT is still optimistic that the TSC would take into account their suggestion to relax the requirements for employing teachers in junior secondary schools while it assesses the CBC.
The union claims that implementing this move will improve both the general standard of education and the job prospects for teachers.
