TSC CHANGES ALL TEACHERS’ TEACHING REQUIREMENTS. VIEW THE NEW MODIFICATIONS

New TSC academic standards. The TSC is currently under pressure from teachers’ unions to establish new teaching requirements.

The Teachers Service Commision (TSC) has received several requests from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).

One of these demands is to lessen the entry requirements for persons desiring to become teachers.

KNUT suggests lowering the current C+ grade cutoff to a C basic.

According to KNUT, teachers who have completed their studies in teachers training colleges possess the necessary skills and credentials to teach at the junior secondary level.

At the moment, the TSC only works with instructors who earned a C+ in secondary school.

KNUT is asking for this employment and deployment mandate to be reevaluated, nevertheless.

The TSC has previously come under fire for its rigid hiring standards, which left many excellent teachers without jobs after graduating.

KNUT is in favour of a more flexible approach that would broaden the range of employment opportunities for teachers, particularly for those with the potential to be successful in the profession.

Recently, the government has focussed on implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in an effort to establish a more comprehensive educational system.

With this curriculum, students are given more emphasis on developing practical knowledge and abilities, preparing them for the workforce rather than just looking for white-collar positions.

KNUT is still hopeful that, in evaluating the CBC, the TSC will take into consideration their recommendation to lower the rules for hiring teachers in junior secondary schools.

New TSC teaching standards

The union contends that putting this idea into action will raise both the standard of education in general and teacher employment opportunities.
