Teacher Graduates who work for Kenya’s Teachers Service Commission fall into job group K, which is now known as grade C2 and is recognized as Secondary Teacher II.
Newly hired instructor will be on probation for at least six (6) months, according to the TSC appointment letter.

Just Incase the teacher’s performance is inadequate, the probation term may be extended in specific instances.
Immediately after three years of service, the teacher is automatically promoted to job group L currently known as grade C3.
Despite the fact that a diploma is the minimal prerequisite for teaching in secondary school, the majority of secondary school tutors are university graduates.
This teacher receives a rental home allowance of Kshs 7,500 and a commuter allowance of Kshs 5,000 under employment group K(grade C2).

Note that there are several deductions subjected to salary of a newly employed teacher. They include;
- The Widows and Children’s Pension Scheme (WCPS) which is about Kshs. 699.10.
- The University Loan Recovery about Kshs. 5000. Note that this is only affecting those teachers who benefitted from HELB.
- The Union Contribution; could be Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers(KUPPET), Kenya National Union of Teachers(KNUT) or Kenya Women Teachers Association(KEWOTA).
- Pay As You Earn (PAYE).
The other deductions could be be either sacco savings or loan repayment if the teacher is servicing a loan.
